Apocalypse Nerd

Yesterday when I met up with Gerard and Mannheim, Gerard loaned me his copy of Apocalypse Nerd, a new book by the great Peter Bagge! As far as indie comics go, Peter Bagge's stuff has always been the top of the heap if you ask me, and I hadn't read anything by him since he did an issue of Spiderman about who-the-hell-knows how many years ago. So Apocalypse Nerd sure was a treat!

Bagge got the idea for it when he heard that South Korean madman Kim Jong Il proudly boasted that his country had the capability to hit Seattle with a nuclear warhead, but at that time the US were so busy with Iraq it didn't even rate a mention in the news. But it sure scared the hell out of Mr Bagge, so he came up with Apocalypse Nerd, a story about two pals who head out to the woods for the weekend, meanwhile North Korea does go ahead and wipe out Seattle with a nuclear bomb.

The book has loads of cool scenes of mankind reduced to savagery, so if you dig all those 'end-of-the-world' type movies (and who doesn't?) then you'll love this as much as I did.

I have to say that I wasn't so crazy about APOCALYPSE NERD. I did like the story, but I found the art lacked the usual Bagge punch; a lot of it looked rushed to me, or like his heart just wasn't in it. If I compare the art in AN to his drawings in NEAT STUFF or even in HATE, there's a real downturn in quality. That said, the writing was strong.
GLad to hear you're rounding up the old gang to take part in BLACKGUARD! It's like the beginning of WILD GEESE, or maybe SEXY BEAST, getting everybody back together for one big score. TO answer your question from yesterday's post re. the use of real names/psuedonyms: I'm ok with using my real name if people may remember me from back in the day, just not in any way that it can be easily found by searching online. So, I guess you can use it in very limited contexts....does that make sense?

I loved Apocalypse Nerd! It's the first thing I've really enjoyed that Bagge has done since he finished HATE all those years ago. But I'm a sucker for a good post apocalyptic yarn, though.

Looks like you're outvoted, Mr Sersugg. Haw!
Understood with the name thing, I'll probably just mention that awesome 'Popeye' cover, that will be enough ;]
